House Concurrent Resolution 17

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MISS JALIN WOOD UPON BEING NAMED MISS MISSISSIPPI 2004.

     WHEREAS, Miss Jalin Wood, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Wood of Waynesboro, Mississippi, was crowned Miss Mississippi 2004 after competing against thirty-nine other contestants in the Miss Mississippi Pageant held in Vicksburg; and

     WHEREAS, an active and outgoing student, Jalin graduated as salutatorian from Wayne Academy in 1999 and summa cum laude from Mississippi College in 2003, holding a bachelor of science degree in chemistry; and

     WHEREAS, while at Mississippi College, Miss Wood was the chemistry honors leader, researching drugs with anti-HIV activity and presented her work at the American Chemical Society National Convention in New Orleans, as well as in Memphis and Atlanta; and

     WHEREAS, having participated in Laguna and Nenamoosha social tribes, Miss Wood actively represented her fellow students at Mississippi College as a freshman senator, sophomore homecoming maid, Mississippi College cheerleader, member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Chi, Mortar Board, Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities, Student Alumni Association and as Treasurer of the American Chemical Society; and

     WHEREAS, a champion quarter horse exhibitor, Jalin's beauty, poise and grace has been featured in several fashion magazines, including:  Cosmopolitan, Allure, Marie Claire, Lucky, In Style, Glamour and Seventeen; and

     WHEREAS, as Mississippi's Miss Hospitality 2001, Miss Wood traveled throughout the state and country promoting Mississippi's tourism, industry and economic development; and

     WHEREAS, now as Miss Mississippi, Jalin, who founded R.E.S.P.E.C.T (Realizing that Every Situation Produces Eventual Consequences . . . Think), will continue her travels establishing chapters of Students Against Destructive Decisions and promoting her platform of empowering young people to make good choices; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, as evidenced by the beautiful and talented young lady, Miss Jalin Wood:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Miss Jalin Wood upon being crowned Miss Mississippi 2004 and extend to her our heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Jalin Wood and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
