Senate Concurrent Resolution 501

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING NOVEMBER 14-20, 2004, AS "NATIONAL HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK" IN MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, for the past several years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored "National Hunger and Homelessness Week"; and

     WHEREAS, the purpose of this designation and its events is to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless, including, the shortage of affordable housing in Mississippi for very low-income residents and to encourage support for homeless assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations; and

     WHEREAS, participating in "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week" not only brings greater awareness to your community, but also helps to promote the national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness.  The plight of those without a home can be both lonely and difficult.  Addressing their struggles by organizing and participating in this week may bring greater solidarity and understanding, as well as promote future involvement; and

     WHEREAS, there are many organizations committed to sheltering, providing supportive services as well as meals and food supplies to the homeless; and

     WHEREAS, the national theme of "National Hunger and Homelessness and Awareness Week 2004" is "Bringing America Home"; and

     WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes that hunger and homelessness continue to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That the Legislature hereby recognizes November 14-20, 2004, as "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week" in Mississippi and encourages all citizens to recognize that many people do not have housing and need support from citizens, and private/public nonprofit service entities.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be forwarded to the Governor, the Secretary of State for appropriate dissemination to support organizations and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
