A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PEARL RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM, FOOTBALL TEAM, MEN'S SOCCER TEAM AND BASEBALL TEAM UPON THEIR OUTSTANDING SEASONS. 

     WHEREAS, the Pearl River Community College Men's Basketball Team defeated South Division rival Hinds Community College 71-60 in a come-from behind contest in the MACJC State Tournament at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville in late February for the Wildcats' fifth MACJC state championship in history.  The title marked PRCC's fourth in Head Coach Richard Mathis' 13 seasons with the Wildcats PRCC wrapping up its season at 20-9 overall with 77-61 loss to Northwest Mississippi Community College in the Region 23 Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton in early March.  Mathis has won a total of six MACJC titles, including a men's title at Northeast Mississippi Community College and a women's title at East Mississippi Community College (finished No. 2 in NJCAA National Tournament); and

     WHEREAS, the Pearl River Community College Football Team defeated South Division Champions Hinds Community College 21-17 for Pearl River Community College's 16th MACJC State Championship in the school's history (first since 1976) in early November.  PRCC finished its seat at 10-1 overall with its only loss of the season coming from the hands of Hinds Community College 31-27 in Poplarville.  The Wildcats were ranked No. 4 in the final NJCAA poll.  PRCC boasted an All-American in two-way standout Larry Kendrick who copped the elite honor as a wide receiver and a defensive back, while being named the NJCAA's "Defensive Player of the Year," the MACJC-Region 23 "Most Valuable Player," along with earning All-Region 23 and All-MACJC honors.  Kendrick will play for the Ole Miss Rebels in the fall.  Head Coach Tim Hatten is a former Wildcat player under J. C. Arban and Mike Nelson; and

     WHEREAS, the Pearl River Community College Men's Soccer Team

defeated perennial powerhouse Hinds Community College with a 3-1 victory for PRCC's first MACJC-Region 23 soccer title (men or women) in the school's history in the MACJC State Tournament played at Hinds Community College in Raymond in mid-November.  PRCC ended its season with a 2-1 loss to Tyler Junior College in the Mid-Southwest District Tournament also hosted by Hinds Community College in Raymond.  In the five-year existence of PRCC women's and men's soccer under Head Coach Adam Breerwood, the veteran mentor has guided at least one of his teams into the post-season every season.  The 2003 Wildcat squad wrapped up its season with a 17-3-2 record; and

     WHEREAS, the Pearl River Community College Baseball Team rose out of the losers' bracket to defeat Meridian Community College two straight times to take its first MACJC state baseball championship in the history of the school.  The Wildcats handed the Eagles a 10-2 stomping in the tournament finals after losing to the Division I team 3-2 in the opening round.  PRCC ended its season at 42-10 overall and ranked No. 2 in the final NJCAA Division II poll.  All-American candidate Rhyne Hughes finished the season with 18 home runs (including two in the state championship game) to lead the NJCAA.  In Head Coach Jay Artigues' first season with PRCC in 2002, the former Wildcat infielder guided his team to their first-ever Region 23 and Super Regional titles and a berth in the 2002 NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, Tennessee; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of this state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Pearl River Community College Men's Basketball Team, Football Team, Men's Soccer Team and Baseball Team upon their outstanding seasons and express our heartiest wishes for continued success in all their athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Pearl River Community College, Head Coach Richard Mathis, Head Coach Tim Hatten, Head Coach Adam Breerwood and Head Coach Jay Artigues and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
