A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE CAREER AND LEGACY OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO STUDENTS OF JOHNNY HUGHES, JR., PRINCIPAL OF LANIER HIGH SCHOOL IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, veteran educator and administrator Johnny Hughes, Jr., who is completing his sixth year as Principal of Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi, has announced his retirement; and

     WHEREAS, Johnny L. Hughes, Jr. is the eldest son of five children (all former graduates of Lanier High School) of Mrs. Viola Hughes and the late Mr. Johnny L. Hughes, Sr.  A 1970 graduate of Lanier Junior/Senior High School, he received his B.A. and M.A. Degrees in History and Administration from Jackson State University.  He holds an Education Specialist Degree in History and Social Studies from Mississippi College and he spent seventeen years as a classroom teacher.  Mr. Hughes' teaching career began in 1974 in Durant, Mississippi, where he taught social studies for three years.  In 1977, he was employed by the Jackson Public School District, where he worked as a classroom teacher for fourteen years before becoming an administrator in 1991.  Hughes worked at Lanier High School from 1991-1995 as an Assistant Principal; and

     WHEREAS, in 1995, Mr. Hughes became Principal of Hinds Agricultural High School where he worked until June 1998.  However, in June 1998, Mr. Hughes was able to return to his alma mater as Principal; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hughes is married to the former Janet D. Butler, who is also a graduate of Lanier.  They have two children, Jarvis, a pharmaceutical representative who resides in Houston, Texas and Janna, a 2002 graduate of Lanier High School, who is currently a Junior at The University of Mississippi majoring in broadcast journalism.  Mr. Hughes is a member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Jackson where he serves as a Deacon, an assistant Sunday School teacher and a member of both the gospel and male choirs; and

     WHEREAS, currently, Mr. Hughes is completing his sixth year as Principal of Lanier High School.  His philosophy of life is:  "All things are possible, when you put God first in your life"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize the dedicated service of this veteran educator whose service has brought honor to his alma mater, his community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the career and legacy of dedicated service to students of Mr. Johnny Hughes, Jr., Principal of Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi, upon the occasion of his retirement, and extend to him and his family the best wishes of the Senate in their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Johnny Hughes and his family and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
