A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SERVICE OF ALLINE JONES COCKRELL OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Alline Jones Cockrell, 76, of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2003; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Cockrell, a native of Shivers, Mississippi, was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, shopping and sharing time with her family and wide circle of friends.  She was affectionately known as "Mama Al" to many, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her reputation as an excellent and prolific cook is legendary; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Cockrell was a member of the Progressive Morningstar Baptist Church in Jackson at the time of her death, and she had also held memberships at James Chapel Baptist Church in Shivers, Smith Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and Pearlie Grove Missionary Baptist Church, both in Jackson; and

     WHEREAS, a member of the Rissah Court No. 80, Daughters of the Isis, Mrs. Cockrell ascended to its highest position, Illustrious Commandress, which she held for three years.  At the time of her death, she was the organization's High Priestess; and

     WHEREAS, very active as a community volunteer, Mrs. Cockrell had served as Chairman of the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson and was a volunteer in several successful local and statewide political campaigns; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Cockrell was the daughter of the late Houston J. Jones and Mossie Oatis Jones of Shivers and the sister of the late Victor Jones of Slidell, Louisiana, and the late Beulah Mae Campeer of Shivers.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Colonel Earnest L. Cockrell of Jackson; three sons:  Charles Cockrell and his wife, Carolyn, of Jackson; Glen Cockrell and his wife, Ella, of Los Angeles, California; and Kenn Cockrell and his wife, Paulette, of Jackson; a daughter, Arleen Cockrell of Jackson; three sisters; a brother; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members, including several friends who "adopted" her as their own "Mama Al"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this individual whose community service served as a model for all Mississippi citizens:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of community and charitable service of Mrs. Alline Jones Cockrell of Jackson, Mississippi, and express to her surviving family the sympathy of the Legislature on her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Mrs. Cockrell and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
