A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MILITARY SERVICE OF PETTY OFFICER FIRST CLASS BETTY TOWNSEND ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT FROM MILITARY SERVICE.

     WHEREAS, on January 11, 2004, Betty Townsend retired from the Navy Reserve, Jackson, Mississippi, Naval Marine Corp Center; and

     WHEREAS, she is the 11th of 13 children; her parents are Connie and Virgil Townsend of DeKalb, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, she was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, with the Atlantic Fleet.  She has a total of 24 years of service with 4 tours overseas of active duty, having entered service on September 1, 1979; her highest ranking was Petty Officer First Class; and

     WHEREAS, she attended Kemper County High, Meridian Jr. College, Coahoma Jr. College, East Mississippi Jr. College and McConnell Airline Stewardess School in New York; and

     WHEREAS, Betty has been employed with Sonny Montgomery VA Center from July 1984 to the present; and

     WHEREAS, Betty has a daughter, Syndnia LuShae Townsend, who is currently a student at Ole Miss; and

     WHEREAS, Betty is a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the military service of this Mississippian who has brought honor to her community and to her state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Petty Officer First Class Betty Townsend on the occasion of her retirement from military service and extend to her the best wishes of the Legislature in her future career.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Betty Townsend and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
