House Resolution 119

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING WORKS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF MR. WILLIAM MARINE HENLEY, SR., TO THE COMMUNITY OF HOLLY SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Mr. William Marine Henley, Sr., was born June 9, 1928, in West Point, Mississippi, to Rhodie Henley and John Blake and now resides in Holly Springs; and

     WHEREAS, having over 40 years of teaching experience at Ashland High School, Rust College, Mississippi Industrial College and Holly Springs High School, Mr. Henley has remained dedicated to serving others in his community; and

     WHEREAS, truly the peoples' advocate, Mr. Henley ran for the office of Alderman, and without having any prior experience won the election, serving in that capacity for 12 years; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Henley was known for standing up for the rights of the less fortunate when no one else would do so, and while attending Tennessee State University, took an active role in the Civil Rights Movement, joining the CORE organization where he helped in planning the "Freedom Rider Movement"; and

     WHEREAS, returning home to West Point at the conclusion of his studies at Tennessee State, Mr. Henley and six other community leaders formed the Marshall County Citizens for Progress organization, which later became known as the United League; and

     WHEREAS, maintaining affiliations with every aspect of the community, be it educational, civic or social, Mr. Henley is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa, the American Science Teacher Association, the Mid-South Research Association, the MARE Fellowship Program, the American Legion, the Masonic Order and the National NAACP; and

     WHEREAS, equipped with a broad educational background, Mr. Henley's learning experience includes extensive training in the sciences and mathematics, which he has willingly and freely shared with those under his instruction and which provided him the privilege of being nominated in 1989 for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives recognizes Mr. Henley for his monumental societal contributions:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the outstanding works and contributions of Mr. William Marine Henley, Sr., to the community of Holly Springs, Mississippi, and extend our warmest wishes for good health, peace and happiness and success in all his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. William Marine Henley, Sr., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
