A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING LILLIAN ZAMORA ON BEING SELECTED AS FEMALE SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR FOR THE 2003 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Lillian Zamora of Quitman, Mississippi, was selected as Female Sportsman of the Year for the 2003 State Games of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the award seeks to honor those athletes who personify the ideals of the State Games movement, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort, positive attitude and commitment in maintaining physical fitness; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Zamora was a 5K Run participant in the State Games of Mississippi, and her results in the 2003 games were one Gold Medal; and

     WHEREAS, having participated in the State Games of Mississippi since 2001, Mrs. Zamora has claimed title to three consecutive Gold Medals in her division during her three years of participation; and  

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Zamora is very focused in her preparation for these events and has worked hard to learn the technical aspects of the sport since taking up running at age 40, and now at age 51 she still maintains that same positive attitude and enthusiasm of competing, and is an all-around athlete; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Zamora's life story isn't chronicled by a long history of success and prosperity, but rather it began under a dictatorship that subsequently resulted in a takeover of the government in her native country, Nicaragua, forcing her family to seek a more secure life in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, having resided in Quitman, Mississippi, for the past 24 years with her husband, Dr. Ivan Zamora, Mrs. Zamora has generated an impressive record of wins in local, regional and national competitions and marathons; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Zamora demonstrates the true spirit of camaraderie of the State Games of Mississippi, as she is committed to doing her very best to compete in numerous events in which she has excelled for the past three years, and she enjoys the competition and has respect for the athletes, volunteers, and staff who work, plan and implement this annual classic; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the citizens of this state: 

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do commend and congratulate Mrs. Lillian Zamora on being selected as Female Sportsman of the Year for the 2003 State Games of Mississippi and express our heartiest wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Zamora and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
