A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE BROOKHAVEN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE BOWL TEAM ON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI REGIONAL SCIENCE BOWL COMPETITION.

     WHEREAS, the Brookhaven High School Science Bowl Team won first place in the Mississippi Regional Science Bowl Competition by defeating the Mississippi School for Math and Science (MSMS) in a tough, double tie-breaking, test of knowledge; and

     WHEREAS, sponsored by the United States Department of Energy, NASA and the Mississippi University for Women, the Mississippi Regional Science Bowl Competition, is an annual qualifying competition for the National Science Bowl, testing students' knowledge in the areas of astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, math and physics; and

     WHEREAS, the Brookhaven High School Science Bowl Team, consisting of Tabitha McKee, Natalie Wolfe, Brandon Russell, Patrick Ayers and Tucker Brady, through their intellectual prowess, won an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete for the national title; and

     WHEREAS, in the regional competition of 12 teams from across the state, Brookhaven High School defeated Walnut High School 62-58 on a tie-breaker and 44-12 and East Webster 128-8, 66-18 and 86-8, before defeating MSMS Team II 56-52 to advance to the finals, pitting them against MSMS Team I to clinch the victory by a score of 50-34 and securing their spot to contend for the national title; and

     WHEREAS, Team Captain Brandon Russell received additional honors and recognition as the top individual scorer for the regional competition with a record-setting 35 correct responses, ousting the previous record of 30 correct responses by an individual; and

     WHEREAS, the Brookhaven High School Science Bowl Team has been superbly coached and inspired by Coach Leah Ann Peavy, who, in addition to other members of the Brookhaven High School teaching staff, has broadened the members' knowledge of the competition and refined their skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, contributing numerous hours of preparation by studying the necessary subjects and meeting on occasion to share their information, the members of the Brookhaven High School Science Bowl Team have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitudes reflect great credit upon the individual members and their coach; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Brookhaven High School Science Bowl Team and their coach, Leah Ann Peavy, for an outstanding display of witty, intuitive and intellectual wealth of knowledge to win the Mississippi Regional Science Bowl Competition and advancing to the national level of competition and express our warmest wishes for success in all their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to each member of the Brookhaven High School Science Bowl Team, Coach Leah Ann Peavy, Brookhaven High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
