A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE WORK OF THE MISSISSIPPI CHRONIC ILLNESS COALITION IN URGING THE CITIZENS OF MISSISSIPPI TO PURSUE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Chronic Illness Coalition has provided leadership in raising the awareness of Mississippi citizens to the extent of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses that affect the health and well-being of many citizens in the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, chronic illness accounts for approximately 75% of all the deaths in the State of Mississippi, resulting in more than 2,000 stroke induced deaths and more than 1,600 diabetic deaths annually; and

     WHEREAS, arthritis is one of the most debilitating chronic illnesses suffered by many Mississippians and the leading cause of disability; and

     WHEREAS, approximately 900,000 citizens of Mississippi are afflicted with hypertension, one-third of which are undiagnosed, and 30% of Mississippi's adult population are reported to have high blood cholesterol; and

     WHEREAS, four of five (or 81%) Mississippi adults are not physically active on a regular basis, and one in five high school students in the state get no type of frequent exercise, causing Mississippi to rank number one in the nation for the number of overweight adults; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the work of the Mississippi Chronic Illness Coalition in raising the public awareness of Mississippi citizens to the extent of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses that affect the health and well-being of many citizens in the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend the Mississippi Chronic Illness Coalition for urging all Mississippians to be physically active, avoid tobacco use, and know your blood pressure, blood glucose and body mass index for the promotion of a healthier lifestyle and extend our heartiest wishes for success in all its future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Chronic Illness Coalition on behalf of its members and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
