House Resolution 18

A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI TO RECITE DAILY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE UNITED STATES FLAG.

     WHEREAS, at the beginning of each day of a legislative session, the House of Representatives opens with a prayer prior to the commencement of business; and

     WHEREAS, regularly paying homage to our great Nation would also be an appropriate action prior to the commencement of business; and

     WHEREAS, many citizens have given their lives in order to preserve our democratic way of life; and

     WHEREAS, it would be proper to recognize our great country and the freedoms it affords all citizens by having the House of Representatives recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each day that the House conducts business during a legislative session; and

     WHEREAS, by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance daily, each House member will be reminded of the unique freedoms which all citizens enjoy; and

     WHEREAS, the events of September 11, 2001, and the war against terrorism have refocused the attention of Americans on patriotism; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to advance and promote patriotism in our great country:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby request the Speaker of the House of Representatives to lead the House in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag at the beginning of each day that the House conducts business during a legislative session.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That House Resolution No. 1 of the First Extraordinary Session of 1990 is rescinded.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Speaker of the House and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
