House Concurrent Resolution 119

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE HANCOCK HIGH SCHOOL LADY HAWKS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING SEASON OF PLAY FOR 2003-2004 AND WINNING THE CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Hancock High School Lady Hawks Basketball Team finished the 2003-2004 season with an impressive record of 29 wins and four losses; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hawks made their mark in school history by winning the first Class 5A State Championship in the 24 years since winning their last state title in 1980 in the 1A Division; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hawks' vie for the state title became more meaningful when they defeated the Murrah Lady Mustangs, the two-time defending state champions by a score of 60-46 before a crowd of approximately 3,000 fans; and

     WHEREAS, many individual honors have been bestowed upon various team members in recognition of their fine, dedicated and superior play and their hard work this season, including the selection of Brooke Necaise, Ashley Boehnel and Courtney Craft to the 5A All-State Team, the naming of Brooke Necaise, who signed with Southeastern Louisiana University, as a recipient of a Division I scholarship; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hawks have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Pam Slayton, who has broadened the team's knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hawks have been supported in their athletic endeavors and attribute much of their success to the many parents, fans and supporters whose moral and spiritual encouragement have remained fervent throughout the season; and

     WHEREAS, they have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Hancock High School; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Hancock High School Lady Hawks Basketball Team and their coach, Pam Slayton, for their phenomenal 2003-2004 season, for winning the Class 5A State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Hancock High School, Head Coach Pam Slayton and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
