A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. JACK H. WHITE FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS THE DIRECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM AT MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY AND FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION.

     WHEREAS, Dr. Jack H. White, has exceptionally served as the Director of the University Honors Program at Mississippi State University for 20 years; and

     WHEREAS, as Director of the University Honors Program, Dr. White has provided excellent, focused and personalized academic experiences for talented students in all fields of study; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. White earned a bachelor of arts in English literature in 1965, a master of arts in English literature/theater in 1967 and a doctor of philosophy in medieval English literature in 1977; and

     WHEREAS, having begun his illustrious career at Mississippi State University as an instructor in 1971, Dr. White also has served as an assistant and associate professor, and as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the university; and 

     WHEREAS, Dr. White, in addition to his currently serving as the Director of the University Honors Program at Mississippi State University, he also serves as the Director of the Distinguished Scholarship Program; and

     WHEREAS, due to Dr. White's outstanding contributions in academia, he has been bestowed with various awards, such as being named an outstanding faculty member by the Student Government Association and outstanding advisor for the Delta Region of Pi Kappa Alpha; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. White has also been recognized for his community service by several organizations, such as the Columbus Historic Foundation which honored Dr. White and his wife, Emilie Cunningham White, as the charter members of Friends of the Foundation due to their passion and commitment to historic preservation efforts; and

     WHEREAS, since 1975, Dr. White has helped to strengthen the sense of community by serving on the Mississippi Humanities Council in a variety of positions, which include serving as a representative among diverse constituencies, vice chair and as council chair; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend an individual, such as Dr. Jack White, who has enriched the community and higher education by utilizing his time, talent and knowledge:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Jack H. White for outstanding service as the Director of Mississippi State's University Honors Program and for his extraordinary career achievements in higher education.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Jack White and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
