A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE GAMMA OMICRON CHAPTER OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC., AND DECLARING APRIL 23, 2004, AS GAMMA OMICRON CHAPTER - ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC., DAY.

     WHEREAS, the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was established on April 23, 1949, at Tougaloo College; and

     WHEREAS, Mississippi's premier undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Gamma Omicron Chapter was established and continues to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve social status, maintain a  progressive interest in college life and be of service to all mankind; and

     WHEREAS, the charter members of Gamma Omicron were Delma Gibson, Alene Hunt, Helen Loveless, Frankie Mackie, Ozelia Mosley, Pearl Seard, Equilla Terrelle, Velma Weathersby, Ermin White, Verna Gibson and Celia Williams; and

     WHEREAS, committed to educational excellence, the Gamma Omicron Chapter sponsors Ivy AKAdemy, which is a program tutoring children at Sunnybrook Orphanage, assisting with science fairs and providing scholarships, in addition to promoting community involvement through voter registration, and hosting Pink and Green Week, which focuses on cultural and social activities; and

     WHEREAS, the chapter demonstrates its commitment to serving the community by participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program and campus clean-up, hosting lunches in the cafeteria, and donating time and money to the American Red Cross, the United Negro College Fund, Toys-for-Tots and Gateway Rescue Mission; and

     WHEREAS, the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has consistently produced outstanding scholars and numerous productive and prestigious members of society; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the civic contributions, grants, scholarships and fellowships made available by respected organizations such as the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and congratulate this organization on the occasion of its 55th Annual Founder's Day, and recognize April 23, 2004, as Gamma Omicron Chapter - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Day in Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the presiding officers of the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
