A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE OF MRS. BETTY LOU HATHCOCK, FORMER ALDERMAN FOR THE CITY OF CORINTH.

     WHEREAS, the community service of the late Mrs. Betty Lou Hathcock was a model of good citizenship and stewardship; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Hathcock was elected Alderman for Ward 5 in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1992, and served until her death on December 26, 2000; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Hathcock graduated from Rienzi High School in 1956, and worked for the local telephone company after graduation, and later worked for Manpower Training School in Corinth as an instructor in secretarial skills before becoming co-owner and operator of Jimmy's Jewelry Store with her husband, Jimmy Hathcock; and

     WHEREAS, her community service is a matter of record:  she worked for Urban Renewal in Corinth; she was a member and President of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #6; she was a member and President of the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post #3962 in Corinth; she was a member of the Alcorn County Democratic Executive Committee; she and her husband founded Corinth's Slug Burger Festival, which is a major event held each summer in the community; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Hathcock was born on November 7, 1938, and raised by her grandparents, Dora and Enoch Walden; she had two children, Rebecca and David, and two stepchildren, Randy and Christie; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we remember the community spirit and service of this great lady who brought recognition to her community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of community service of former Corinth City Alderman Betty Lou Hathcock and extend to her surviving family the best wishes of the Senate in her memory.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Jimmy Hathcock and be forwarded to the Board of Aldermen of the City of Corinth, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
