A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE WILLIAM CALVERT UPON BEING SELECTED BELLSOUTH MALE SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR AT THE 2002 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, William Calvert, a 67-year-old track and field enthusiast from Gulfport, Mississippi, has been selected as the BellSouth Male Sportsman of the Year at the 2002 State Games of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, William competed in his third State Games in track and field in 2002; his results in the 2000 Summer Biathlon was a Gold Medal; his results in the 2001 Summer Biathlon was a Gold Medal, and a Gold Medal in the two-mile Road Races; his results in the 2002 Summer Biathlon was a Gold Medal, a Silver Medal in the 400-meter race, a Silver Medal in the 100-meter race, a Gold Medal in the 200-meter, a Gold Medal in the 5K Road Races, a Gold Medal in the Canoe/Kayak Race, a Gold Medal in the 500-meter sprint and a Gold Medal in the two-mile race; and

     WHEREAS, William Calvert demonstrates the true spirit of the State Games of Mississippi, as he is committed to doing his very best to compete in numerous events in which he has excelled, enjoys the competition and has respect for the athletes, volunteers and the staff who work, plan and implement this annual event; and

     WHEREAS, he brings many of his family members and friends from the Mississippi Gulf Coast to participate in the games; a retired Deputy Sheriff with the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, William continues to be active in law enforcement in Harrison County; Mr. Calvert is a cancer survivor having been cancer-free for 5 years; he started participating in the State Games of Mississippi to improve his health and chances of a longer life; and

     WHEREAS, the BellSouth Sportsman of the Year Award honors the foremost Male and Female Sportsman of the Year who represent the true spirit of competition, and William exemplifies the true spirit of the games through his athletic accomplishments and his sportsmanship toward all participants; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable sportsman who brings honor to his community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate William Calvert of Gulfport, Mississippi, for his accomplishment in being selected as the 2002 BellSouth Male Sportsman of the Year, and wish him continued success in his future athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to William Calvert and his family and be made available to The Sun Herald and the Capitol Press Corps.
