Senate Concurrent Resolution 599

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MARCH AS "WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH IN MISSISSIPPI" AND RECOGNIZING THE HONOREES OF THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY PROJECT.

     WHEREAS, March 2003 is National Women's History Month; and

     WHEREAS, in National Women's History Month, we honor all women who have touched this nation's history and our own personal history, women who contribute to the people and ideals of this great country; and

     WHEREAS, the National Women's History Project has adopted as its theme for 2003 "Women Pioneering the Future", to acknowledge the pioneering women from U.S. history who led and won struggles for equality and civil rights, created and advanced educational and professional opportunities and made great contributions to the arts, sciences and humanistic causes, and the innovative women of today who further these efforts and continue to expend the frontiers of possibility for generations to come; and

     WHEREAS, in keeping with this theme, the National Women's History Project has selected the following women exemplary of the women who inspired us as pioneers:

     (a)  Rebecca Adamson, Native American Advocate;

     (b)  Rachel Carson, Scientist and Environmentalist;

     (c)  Linda Chavez-Thompson, Labor Leader;

     (d)  Mae C. Jemison, Scientist, Educator and Former                Astronaut;

     (e)  Yuri Kochiyama, Civil Rights Advocate;

     (f)  Tania Leon, Composer and Conductor;

     (g)  Robin Roberts, Broadcast Journalist;

     (h)  Harilyn Rousso, Disability Rights Activist and                Psychotherapist;

     (i)  Margaret Chase Smith, Congressional Representative and        Senator;

     (j)  Wilma L. Vaught, Brigadier General, United States Air              Force, Retired; and

     (k)  Rebecca Walker, Youth Organizer and Writer; and

     WHEREAS, to emphasize the role of women in our state, the Legislature in 2001 established the Mississippi Commission on the Status of Women to advise and consult with the Legislature and the executive branch on policies affecting the political status and other concerns of women in Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these women who serve as role models in pioneering Mississippi's future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby designate March 2003 as "Women's History Month in Mississippi" and recognize the honorees of the National Women's History Project who represent the theme of "Women Pioneering the Future."

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded by the Secretary of State to the Mississippi Commission on the Status of Women and a copy be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
