A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MECHELLE RAMSHUR OF COLUMBIA, MISSISSIPPI, FOR BEING NAMED THE "MISSISSIPPI OUTSTANDING ELEMENTARY SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2002" BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

     WHEREAS, Mechelle B. Ramshur, a fourth grade teacher at Sumrall Elementary School, has been named the "Mississippi Outstanding Elementary Science Teacher of the Year for 2002" by the State Department of Education; and

     WHEREAS, Mechelle is a resident of Columbia, Mississippi, a National Board Certified Teacher and has taught in the Lamar County School system since 1994; and

     WHEREAS, she holds an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree from William Carey College; and this dedicated teacher has served in the following school-related activities:  Sumrall Elementary Science Fair Committee Chair, initiated in 2001; Grade Chair, 2001-2002, 1999-2000 and 1995-1996; Sumrall Little Theatre Assistant Director, 1998 to present; Sumrall Little Bobcat News, initiated in 1998; Sumrall Elementary Public Relations Committee, 2001-2002; Accelerated Reader Committee, 2001-2002; Reading Night for Parents, 1999-2000; Science Night for Parents, 2001-2002; and Adopt-A-School Committee Member; and

     WHEREAS, Mechelle belongs to the following professional organizations:  Delta Kappa Gamma, Mississippi Science Teachers Association and National Science Teachers Association; and

     WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes the importance of science skills at the elementary level in order to instill an interest in the field of engineering and related professions; and

     WHEREAS, Mechelle's educational philosophy is that excellence in education is an illusive quality for which we are always striving; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this Mississippian whose dedication to her students brings honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mechelle Ramshur, a fourth grade teacher at Sumrall Elementary School, upon her receipt of the Mississippi Outstanding Elementary Science Teacher of the Year Award for 2002, and extend to her and her family the best wishes of the Legislature.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Mechelle Ramshur, be forwarded to the Principal of Sumrall Elementary School, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
