A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE SMITH FAMILY FOR THEIR TREMENDOUS SACRIFICE TO THE UNITED STATES MILITARY AND FOR LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

     WHEREAS, Robert Bruce Smith married Julia Ann Whinery in 1913 in Neshoba County, Mississippi, and to their union were born ten children:  three daughters, Nettie McRee, Mary Ann and Emma Lou; and seven sons, Morris Herman, Jasper Henry, Harry Lee, Jackson Eliot, Thomas Jefferson, Grady Lamar and Robert Bruce, Jr.; and

     WHEREAS, six of their seven sons were called to duty and served concurrently in the defense of the United States during World War II; and

     WHEREAS, Morris Herman Smith served in the United States Army and was stationed in the United States; Jasper Henry Smith served in the United States Army, was stationed in the Pacific and received medals for the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign; Harry Lee Smith served in the United States Army, was stationed in the Pacific and received medals for Good Conduct, the American Defense Service, Asian Philippines Theater Operations, and two Bronze Stars; Jackson Eliot Smith served in the United States Army, was stationed in Africa and Europe and received a Purple Heart medal, a Silver Star medal, an AEMETO medal, and a Good Conduct medal; and Thomas Jefferson Smith and Grady Lamar Smith both served in the United States Navy and were stationed in the Pacific; and

     WHEREAS, after service to their country, all six sons returned home, were married, raised families and five of the sons taught in the State of Mississippi for some or all of their careers; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend families of Mississippi who have made tremendous sacrifices to the defense of our country:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the Smith family for their tremendous sacrifice to the United States military and for their loyal and dedicated service to the United States of America.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Smith family and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
