House Resolution 34

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MISS JANICE FAYE DAVIS II UPON HER MANY OUTSTANDING TRACK AND FIELD ACHIEVEMENTS.

     WHEREAS, Miss Janice Faye Davis II, a senior at Natchez High School, has been recognized for numerous outstanding track and field achievements; and

     WHEREAS, from 1999 to 2002, Miss Davis was named the Mississippi State Champion in 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter, the Most Valuable Player for the Natchez High School Track Team and was awarded the Natchez High School Athletic Academic Award; and

     WHEREAS, in addition, Miss Davis has been named an All-American by several groups including the Track and Field News in 2000 and 2001, USA Track and Field in 2000 and 2001, Accelerade in 2002; USA Today Sports Writers in 2002; 2003 School Sports Magazine High School; and named National Scholastic Indoor Championship All-American for 2001, 2002 and 2003 in New York City; and

     WHEREAS, throughout her long and distinguished career, Miss Davis has received numerous awards such as being nominated for Wendy's High School Heisman in 2002; Who's Who in Sports in 2001 and 2002; United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award in 2002; 2001 and 2002 Nike Athlete of the week; and

     WHEREAS, on a national level, Miss Davis has been a member of the 2001 USA World Youth Champion Team in Debrecen, Hungary, and the 2001 USA Track and Field Team, where the USA faced Great Britain; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Davis has participated in several tournaments and track meets including the Junior National Championship in Richmond, Virginia, where she was named the 2001 Champion in the 200 meter and won the Bronze Medal in the 100 meter; the LSU Indoor Invitational, where she was named Most Valuable Player in 2001 and 2002; the Nokia Sugar Bowl in 2001, where she was named Most Valuable Player and set a new meet record in the 100 and 200 meter; the Mobile Meet of Champions in 2002, where she was selected as Most Valuable Player; and the Arkansas Indoor Invitational, where she set meet records in the 60 meter and the 400 meter in 2002; and 

     WHEREAS, because of her many outstanding accomplishments, Miss Davis has been featured in Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd, February 11, 2002, edition and in the 2002 High School Runner Magazine, 2002 fall edition; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Davis has received a full athletic scholarship to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend outstanding young people such as Miss Davis, a remarkable young woman with strong athletic and academic abilities:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we commend and congratulate Miss Janice Faye Davis II upon her many outstanding track and field achievements and express our heartiest wishes for continued success in all her future athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Janice Faye Davis II and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
