House Resolution 27


     WHEREAS, Lydia Rice of Tupelo, Mississippi, was selected as a 2002 State Games of Mississippi Athlete of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, the award seeks to honor those athletes who personify the ideals of the State Games movement, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort and positive attitude; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Rice was a track and field participant in the State Games of Mississippi, and her results in the 2002 games were 1 Silver Medal in the 400 meter and 3 Gold Medals in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and 4x100 relay; and

     WHEREAS, having participated in the State Games of Mississippi for two years, Ms. Rice recorded a new record in 2002 in the high jump with 4 feet, 9 inches in the 13-14-year-old division, and in the 100-meter hurdles, she ran a time of 18.5 seconds; and  

     WHEREAS, Ms. Rice is very focused in her preparation for these events and has worked hard to learn the technical aspects, and is an all-around athlete having been a member of the Tupelo select soccer team for several years; and

     WHEREAS, not only is Ms. Rice an honor student and active in her church youth group choir, she was an All-State Player in the Mississippi High School Athletic Association 5A State Cross-Country Meet, finishing 9th overall, and was also the 3rd Tupelo High School runner who helped Tupelo win the 5A Championship; and  

     WHEREAS, Lydia Rice demonstrates the true spirit of the State Games of Mississippi as she is committed to doing her very best to compete in numerous events in which she has excelled for the past three years, and she enjoys the competition and has respect for the athletes, volunteers, and staff who work, plan and implement this annual classic; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of our state, who are its future: 

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we commend and congratulate Lydia Rice on being selected as a State Games Athlete of the Year and express our heartiest wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Lydia Rice and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
