House Concurrent Resolution 60

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND WORKS OF ROSE ELLA PERKINS EVANS AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Rose Ella Perkins Evans departed this life on September 4, 1999, causing great loss and sorrow to her family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Evans, a native of Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, was born July 11, 1949, to Frank and Mary Perkins; and

     WHEREAS, upon graduating from Henderson High School, Mrs. Evans attended Alcorn State University, where she received her bachelor's degree in English; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Evans, after obtaining her degree, accepted a position with the Starkville Public Schools as high school English teacher, a position she retained for twenty-six years; and

     WHEREAS, on June 6, 1986, Mrs. Evans married Leonard Evans, and was a caring, loving and devoted wife;

     WHEREAS, active in the community, Mrs. Evans was affiliated with Alcorn Alumni Association, Order of the Eastern Star, American Red Cross, the local NAACP, as well as the district, state and national education associations; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Evans, a diligent member of the Mt. Peiler M.B. Church, served the church in many capacities, including:  vice president of the gospel choir, co-youth directress, new member orientation instructor, member of the Missionary Society, Pastor's Support Committee, newsletter staff, media center staff, Scholarship Committee, Program Committee chairperson, pastor's secretary and Girl Scouts advisor; and

     WHEREAS, in honor of Mrs. Evans' devout works and dedication to the students and learning environment of Starkville High School, the Rose Ella Perkins Evans Memorial Scholarship has been established to award the graduating senior demonstrating having met the criteria of ability, achievement, desire to succeed, and financial need for assistance; and

     WHEREAS, the legacy and memory of Mrs. Evans will forever live on in the lives of all who knew and loved her, particularly her survivors, including:  husband, Leonard Evans; three brothers, Tommy Perkins, Roy Perkins and Charles L. Perkins; three stepchildren, Dwayne Evans, Kenneth Evans and Nekeya Evans; thirteen nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature of the State of Mississippi to commend such outstanding Mississippians as Mrs. Evans, whose positive influence, encouragement and educating of the youth of this state will always be remembered:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and works of Mrs. Rose Ella Perkins Evans, and express our deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Rose Ella Perkins Evans, Starkville High School and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
