House Concurrent Resolution 9

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PICAYUNE HIGH SCHOOL MAROON TIDE BASEBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE 2002 STATE CLASS 4-A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Picayune High School Maroon Tide Baseball Team completed the 2002 season with an overall record of 35 wins and only three losses; and

WHEREAS, the Maroon Tide won the South State Championship for the second year in a row and captured the State Class 4-A Championship; and

WHEREAS, the Maroon Tide finished the 2002 season ranked number one in the State of Mississippi, number five nationally by USA Today and number seven by Baseball America; and

WHEREAS, several of the players for the Picayune High School Maroon Tide Baseball Team were named to the All-State Team; and

WHEREAS, the Maroon Tide were superbly coached and inspired this season by Head Coach Kent Kirkland and Assistant Coaches John Dobson, Cayne Stockstill and Ryan Moreaux, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, in addition, Head Coach Kent Kirkland was named Coach of the Year by The Picayune Item, The Clarion-Ledger and The Sun Herald; and

WHEREAS, the Maroon Tide have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Picayune High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of our great state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Picayune High School Maroon Tide Baseball Team and Head Coach Kent Kirkland and Assistant Coaches John Dobson, Cayne Stockstill and Ryan Moreaux for their outstanding 2002 baseball season and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Picayune High School, Head Coach Kent Kirkland and Assistant Coaches John Dobson, Cayne Stockstill and Ryan Moreaux and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
