AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE RETIRING CORRECTIONAL FIELD OFFICERS OF THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO RETAIN THE SERVICE WEAPON ISSUED TO THEM BY THE DEPARTMENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSE  

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Each person employed by the Mississippi Department of Corrections as a Correctional Field Officer who retires for superannuation or for reason of disability under the Public Employees' Retirement System with twenty (20) or more consecutive years of service with the Mississippi Department of Corrections, upon his request, shall be allowed to retain, as his personal property, one (1) service weapon that was issued to him during his service.

     SECTION 2.  Section 1 of this act shall be codified as a new section in Chapter 5, Title 47, Mississippi Code of 1972.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2003.
