AN ACT TO INCREASE THE ANNUAL SALARIES OF THE FACULTY OF THE STATE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING BY FOUR PERCENT PER YEAR FOR THREE YEARS, BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 2005; TO DIRECT THE APPROPRIATION OF FUNDS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE THE SALARY INCREASES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The governing authority of each state institution of higher learning shall increase the annual salary of each member of the faculty of that institution, effective January 1, 2005, by an amount equal to four percent (4%) of the faculty member's salary in effect on December 31, 2004.

     (2)  The governing authority of each state institution of higher learning shall increase the annual salary of each member of the faculty of that institution, effective January 1, 2006, by an amount equal to four percent (4%) of the faculty member's salary in effect on December 31, 2005.

     (3)  The governing authority of each state institution of higher learning shall increase the annual salary of each member of the faculty of that institution, effective January 1, 2007, by an amount equal to four percent (4%) of the faculty member's salary in effect on December 31, 2006.

     SECTION 2.  During Fiscal Years 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Legislature shall appropriate to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning those funds necessary to provide for the increases in faculty salaries provided for in this act out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2003.
