Senate Resolution 15

A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING THE JACKSON SENATORS BASEBALL TEAM FOR THEIR EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE AND ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR, BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

     WHEREAS, the Jackson Senators Baseball Team was welcomed to Smith-Wills Stadium in the early Spring of 2002, returning quality professional baseball to the City of Jackson after a one-year hiatus; and

     WHEREAS, the Senators began the season in mid-May with only a couple of weeks of Spring training to prepare them for a 96-game schedule in the Central Baseball League (CBL), comprised of teams from Louisiana, Texas, Missouri and the Magnolia State; and

     WHEREAS, the Senators remarkably finished the regular season and went on to capture the Eastern Division Championship in this their first year of existence; and

     WHEREAS, with excellent support from the City of Jackson, as well as surrounding communities, the Senators enjoyed outstanding attendance, averaging nearly 1,800 fans per game and providing a significant boost to the local economy; and

     WHEREAS, the Jackson Senators achieved championship runner-up status in the CBL battling the San Angelo, Texas, Colts to a fifth and final game in the League Championship Series before losing the title by one unearned run; and

     WHEREAS, the Senators have captured the hearts of thousands of baseball fans in the Central Mississippi area by providing an outstanding venue of clean family entertainment and quality baseball performance at reasonable cost; and

     WHEREAS, the team has taken its name from the excellent Jackson "Senators" Team of the 1940s and 1950s which was a very popular mid-Mississippi team playing on the Mississippi State Fairgrounds, and we are proud that the Senators' logo and mascot is the Eagle representing the Seal of the State of Mississippi which flies on top of the New Capitol Building:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we, the members of the State Senate, do hereby congratulate and commend the Jackson Senators Team Members, Field Manager, General Manager, Support Staff and Club Owners for their exemplary performance and achievements this year, both on and off the field, and furthermore, that we wish them growing support and success in the seasons to come.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the Jackson Senators Team Members, Field Manager and General Manager, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
