A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LEGACY OF PUBLIC SERVICE OF DISTRICT 5 STATE SENATOR JOHN R. WHITE.
WHEREAS, State Senator John R. White, a Democrat from Baldwyn, Mississippi, has announced his resignation from the Legislature; and
WHEREAS, an optometrist, John White is in his 19th year in the Senate, representing District 5 which includes parts of Itawamba, Lee, Prentiss and Tishomingo Counties; and
WHEREAS, in John White, the residents of District 5 have lost an honest, dependable State Senator, and the residents of Mississippi have lost 18 years of Senate experience and unquestioned integrity; and
WHEREAS, Senator White is in his third term as Chairman of the Senate Local and Private and has served with distinction on the Appropriations, Business and Financial Institutions, Constitution, Highways and Transportation, Insurance, Public Health and Welfare and Universities and Colleges committees, this committee experience representing substantial legislative influence; and
WHEREAS, he was a champion of open government, consistently supporting expansion of open meetings and open records legislation and expressed the belief that the public had a right to know what went on behind closed public doors; and
WHEREAS, Senator White is a successful practicing optometrist, who during his term was influential in optometric licensure legislation; he was a backbone of church, civic, scouting and economic development efforts across his district; he was instrumental in establishing the Brice's Crossroad National Battlefield Visitors Center and Museum near the famous battlefield site; and he was dedicated to his wife, Ann Hoover, and children, Robin, Kris and Ann; and
WHEREAS, Senator White served with distinction and we will miss his friendship:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the legacy of public service of District 5 State Senator John R. White of Baldwyn, Mississippi, and wish him and his family continued success in their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to John White and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
