Senate Resolution 69

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF PUBLIC SERVICE OF ROSEDALE CITY COUNCILWOMAN LA VEARN "MS. KITTY" LAURENCE AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

     WHEREAS, Rosedale City Councilwoman La Vearn "Ms. Kitty" Laurence passed away on March 30, 2002; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Laurence was born in Beulah, Mississippi, attended elementary school in Rosedale, Bolivar County, Mississippi, attended high school at Hyde Park Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois, and received a diploma from Madam C.J. Walker College of Beauty Culture in Chicago, Illinois; and

     WHEREAS, she was elected to the Rosedale City Council on December 11, 2000, was a member of the Mississippi Municipal Association, a member of the West Bolivar Christian Association, a member of the Rosedale Optimist Club and an active member of the Pleasant Green Baptist Church; and

     WHEREAS, Rosedale Mayor Andrew Williams praised Laurence as a "real likable person" who was instrumental in procuring hundreds of thousands of dollars for the town.  "She played a powerful role in the city and she will stand as a great loss to the community"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with much sadness that we note the passing of this dedicated public servant, who leaves a legacy of friendship and public service to her community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of public service of Rosedale City Councilwoman La Vearn "Ms. Kitty" Laurence and express the sympathy of the Legislature to her friends and family on her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Ms. Laurence, be forwarded to the Rosedale City Council and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
