Senate Resolution 58

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MURRAH HIGH SCHOOL "LADY MUSTANGS" BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2001-2002 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE STATE 5A CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Murrah High School "Lady Mustangs" Basketball Team finished the 2001-2002 season with a remarkable record of 32 wins and three losses; and

     WHEREAS, ranked No. 3 in The Clarion Ledger poll, the Lady Mustangs finished their sixth straight season with a record of at least 30 wins; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Mustangs won the Class 5A State Championship, beating Columbus High School Lady Falcons with a 49-46 come-from-behind victory at the Mississippi Coliseum before an estimated 5,000 sports fans; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to the State 5A Championship, the Lady Mustangs won the Jackson Public Schools Pepsi Tournament and the Division 3-5A Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, the Murrah High School Lady Mustangs have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Anna Jackson, who has broadened the Mustangs' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution, and has brought additional honor to Murrah High School by becoming the first woman to win five state championships; and

     WHEREAS, the team roster of the Championship Squad is as follows:  Tiffany Franklin (Junior), Patrice Cox (Sophomore), Ninette Ayivor (Senior), Rosemary Enobakhare (Sophomore), Shaneka Jones (Sophomore), Ramsey Wise (Junior), Janie Mitchell (Sophomore), Navonda Moore (Junior), Natosha Tate (Sophomore), Monique Merritt (Senior), Margaree King (Sophomore), Olicia King (Senior), Notasha Taylor (Sophomore), Diamond Rogers (Sophomore) and Lashondra Griffin (Senior); Managers:  Jessica Ayers, Akesha Jenkins and Eruke Ohwofasa; Scorekeeper:  Marvin Jackson; Clock operator:  Dennis Carter; Head Coach Anna Jackson and Assistant Coach Jacqueline Ross; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the outstanding accomplishments of this group of student-athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we commend and congratulate the Murrah High School Lady Mustangs Basketball Team and their coach, Head Coach Anna Jackson, for their phenomenal 2001-2002 season, for winning the Class 5A State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Murrah High School, Head Coach Anna Jackson and furnished to Principal Karen Wilson and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
