Senate Resolution 28

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WILLIAM CAREY COLLEGE THEATRE ON WINNING THE 2002 COLLEGIATE EXCELLENCE IN THEATRE ARTS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS.

     WHEREAS, William Carey College Theatre (WCC) has a long tradition of excellence in performance, academics and community outreach; and

     WHEREAS, significant national recognition came when WCC began participating in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) in 1995; and

     WHEREAS, in four of the last five years, WCC has performed at the Region IV Festival (six productions from the ten southeastern states are selected annually).  Carey's And David Danced was one of four productions in the United States invited to the Kennedy Center national festival in Washington; and

     WHEREAS, the playwright, Carey student Jonathan Evans, won the national Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award.  In ACTF design competitions WCC students have won four national awards at the Kennedy Center and ten regional prizes; and

     WHEREAS, WCC Theatre is the first and only American company to perform at the Annual International Theatre Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia; and

     WHEREAS, the heart of the program is academic achievement; students enjoy a 100% acceptance rate to graduate schools and graduates can be found in professional theatre and in other jobs throughout the country; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the excellence in the arts evidenced by these scholar-performers, who have brought honor to their university, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the William Carey College Theatre on winning the 2002 Collegiate Excellence in Theatre Arts Award for the Governor's Excellence in the Arts, and wish the theatre student-performers and faculty success in their future productions.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the Director of the William Carey College Theatre and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
