A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. SALLY W. CARMICHAEL ON WINNING THE 2002 ARTS PATRON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Sally W. Carmichael has spent a lifetime of commitment to the arts and to the quality of life in Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, whether planning a church chamber music concert or guiding a group of symphony volunteers, Mrs. Carmichael's love of music prompted her early involvement in the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, for which her father was an early benefactor; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Carmichael, serving 25 years on the Board of Trustees for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, was instrumental in its growth into the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra; and
WHEREAS, serving in other various capacities through the years on the local and national levels, Mrs. Carmichael has brought national attention to the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra by implementing the first symphony concert presented in a rehabilitation hospital and by receiving the Volunteer Council's National Education and Community Service Award; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Carmichael, during her tenure on the board of directors for the Arts Alliance of Jackson and Hinds County and the Mississippi Museum of Art Auxiliary, was selected as the "1996 Volunteer of the Year"; and
WHEREAS, establishing a milestone, Mrs. Carmichael was the chairman of the first "Art for Heart" benefit for the Mississippi Chapter of the American Heart Association, the largest, single fund-raising event which showcases Mississippi artists; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize excellence evidenced by an outstanding Mississippian such as Mrs. Carmichael, who has brought honor to her community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Sally W. Carmichael for her excellence in the arts and for being the 2002 recipient of the Arts Patron Award.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Sally W. Carmichael at induction ceremonies and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
