Senate Concurrent Resolution 564

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ANDREW CARY YOUNG OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, WINNER OF THE 2000 GOVERNOR'S EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS AWARD IN THE CATEGORY OF ARTIST ACHIEVEMENT.

     WHEREAS, Andrew is a native Mississippian, raised in Jackson.  He graduated from LSU with a degree in Landscape Architecture.  Returning home in 1975, he established Pearl River Glass Studio with the idea of applying his special training as a designer to his chosen career as an artist in glass; and

     WHEREAS, Andrew has dedicated his career to the idea that stained glass is the most expressive of artistic media.  An integral part of the execution of his artwork has been the successful collaboration with members of Pearl River Glass Studio.  He received the Grant to Individual Artists from the Mississippi Arts Commission in 1987.  He has studied with German glass artists Ludwig Schaffrath and Hans Gotfried von Stockhausen, and since 1996, Andrew has studied with Russian master iconographer Vladislav Adrejev; and

     WHEREAS, Andrew's designs in stained glass have recently been completed by PRGS for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Madison, and St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church, Gulfport, First United Methodist Church, Tupelo and the Paris-Yates Chapel, University of Mississippi, Oxford; and

     WHEREAS, Andrew served on the board of the Arts Alliance of Jackson/Hinds County, the Craftsman's Guild of Mississippi, and Millsaps Arts and Lecture Series.  He presently serves on the Board of Directors of the North Mid-town Community Development Corporation and the Stained Glass Association of America.  He was recently elected Second Vice President of the SGAA.  His work has been exhibited at the Mississippi Museum of Art, Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and Pearl River/Studio Gallery; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the inspiration and talent of this Mississippian who has brought honor to his craft, his community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Andrew Cary Young of Jackson, Mississippi, winner of the 2002 Governor's Excellence in the Arts Award in the category of Artist Achievement, and wish him and his family continued success in his future artistic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Andrew Young on February 15, 2002, at the Governor's Excellence in the Arts ceremony and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
