A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SUPERVISOR DARRYL V. GRENNELL OF ADAMS COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, THE BLUFF CITY POST "MAN OF THE YEAR."   

     WHEREAS, Supervisor of District 4 in Adams County, Darryl V. Grennell has been selected by the Bluff City Post as the 2001 Man of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, he is a native of Natchez, the son of Jonathan and Renza Grennell; and

     WHEREAS, he is a 1983 graduate of the Natchez Adams School District.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, Mississippi and received his Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education from Alcorn State University in 1990, and is furthering his studies at the University of Southern Mississippi in the area of Microbiology; and

     WHEREAS, he is one of the most eligible bachelors in the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Darryl is known throughout Adams County for his hard work for all of the citizens of this county.  He is a unique politician who will stop and listen to anyone from any district who has a problem with county government, whether he can solve it or not, he takes the time to give attention to it; and

     WHEREAS, he makes it a point to open up avenues which have not been open before to the citizens of his county; and

     WHEREAS, several years ago, he found out that area churches could receive a $2,000.00 grant for summer programs and many church secretaries and ministers found application blanks in their mailboxes, and this has brought great progress for the churches and it has given them a chance to extend their reach into the community; and

     WHEREAS, Supervisor Grennell is always delighted when the community asks him to come before an audience to explain the workings of county government; and

     WHEREAS, to further explain what is going on in county government, city government, and in state government, Supervisor Grennell has a Sunday evening talk show on WTYJ 97.7 FM and 1240 AM radio; and

     WHEREAS, not only is Supervisor Grennell a political leader, he also serves on the faculty at Alcorn State University in the Department of Biological Sciences; and

     WHEREAS, one of the many things that Darryl brought to the public's attention was the old forgotten graveyard on the grounds of Clarmount Baptist Church on Cemetery Road, which houses the resting place of black Union Civil War soldiers, and there is now an effort underway to see what can be done about getting that cemetery cleaned up and finding the Union Civil War graves that are located there; and

     WHEREAS, in his role as a strong community and political leader, Grennell has worked with all politicians and has not put himself into the position that he is taken for granted by any politician or that he may be taken for granted for a favor; and

     WHEREAS, Grennell comes from a family with a strong public service background.  His father worked for Johns-Manville for many years but was also a businessman.  His mother, while still teaching became a member of the Board of Trustees of Natchez Regional Medical Center and became its first female Board Chairman.  His Aunt Joyce, also an elementary school principal for many years, is also a Supervisor of Education for the Adams County School District.  His first cousin Robert Johnson, a lawyer, is also a State Senator representing Adams and other counties; and

     WHEREAS, for his many endeavors, Darryl Grennell is making Adams County a better place for all citizens to live, work and raise their families; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the civic devotion of Supervisor Darryl Grennell who brings honor to his community and to his state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That

we do hereby commend and congratulate Supervisor Darryl V. Grennell of Adams County, Mississippi, upon being selected the Bluff City Post "2001 Man of the Year" and we wish him continued success in his civic, charitable and other endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Darryl Grennell and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
