Senate Concurrent Resolution 525

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF CHARLES W. DOWDY AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Charles W. Dowdy, one of the most well-known and respected names in Coast radio, died November 1, 2001; and

     WHEREAS, Charles W. Dowdy was born on December 25, 1917, in Dodge County, Georgia, the son of the late Charles Morris Dowdy and Sallie Fitzgerald Dowdy; and

     WHEREAS, a successful radio executive, Charles W. Dowdy began his career in 1937 as an announcer in Waycross, Georgia, and later owned stations in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, in 1959, Charles W. Dowdy moved to the Coast and at the time of his death was President and Chairman of the Board of Coast Radio Group in Gulfport; and

     WHEREAS, Charles W. Dowdy was a member of the Mississippi Broadcasters Association, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Gulfport Rotary Club, and an ordained deacon and member of the First Baptist Church in Gulfport; and

     WHEREAS, Charles W. Dowdy is survived by his wife, Alice, with whom he would have celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary on June 7, and by his three children, Morgan, Wayne and Gloria; and

     WHEREAS, the death of Charles W. Dowdy has caused great loss and sorrow to his family and friends:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Charles W. Dowdy and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Charles W. Dowdy and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
