Senate Concurrent Resolution 508

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SERVICE OF FORMER STATE SENATOR SAM WRIGHT OF CLINTON, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

     WHEREAS, former State Senator Sam Wright of Clinton, Mississippi, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2001; and

     WHEREAS, Sam Wright was a native of Greenwood and moved to Jackson in 1949, where he was in the insurance business.  He was the owner of Wright Insurance Agency and co-owner with his wife of Winifred's antiques; and

     WHEREAS, Sam Wright moved to Clinton in 1969 where he served in the Mississippi Senate from 1972 to 1980, serving constituents in Clinton and the surrounding Hinds County area; and

     WHEREAS, Sam Wright was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict where he served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and 1951 to 1952.  Sam Wright was a graduate of Delta State University where he was chosen Alumnus of the Year in 1974.  He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and the American College of Life Underwriters.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Clinton; and

     WHEREAS, Sam Wright was an avid sportsman throughout his life and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his two sons; and

     WHEREAS, survivors include:  wife, Winifred Walker Wright of Clinton; son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Cindy Wright of Madison; son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Nell Wright of Madison; and two grandchildren, Nelson and Alexander Wright; and

     WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of Sam Wright, who was a friend to many of us in the Legislature, as well as a dedicated public servant:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of public service of former State Senator Sam Wright of Clinton, Mississippi, and express to his family the sympathy of the Legislature on his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Sam Wright's wife, Winifred, and to members of his family, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
