House Resolution 64

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. DON WHITTEN UPON BEING NAMED SPORTSWRITER OF THE YEAR FOR MISSISSIPPI IN 2001.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Don Whitten was selected as Sportswriter of the Year for Mississippi in 2001; and

     WHEREAS, after graduating from Pontotoc High School, Mr. Whitten attended the University of Mississippi, where he received his bachelor's degree in journalism; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Whitten began his journalism career with the Pontotoc Progress as a Sportswriter from 1972 to 1977 and then served one year as Sports Editor of The Daily Mississippian; and

     WHEREAS, in 1977, Mr. Whitten joined The Oxford Eagle as Sports Editor, where he is responsible for planning daily sports coverage of three area high schools, one area junior college, the University of Mississippi and local youth programs; and

     WHEREAS, throughout his long and distinguished career, Mr. Whitten has received numerous awards and honors, including his selection as Mississippi Sportswriter of the Year in 1998 and 2002 by members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Whitten has been lovingly supported in all his endeavors by his wife, Janet; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend excellence in outstanding Mississippians such as Mr. Whitten:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Don Whitten for being selected as Sportswriter of the Year for Mississippi in 2001 and express our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Don Whitten and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
