House Resolution 16

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF WORLD WAR II VETERAN JULIUS LINSON "PETE" REID, JR., AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS ON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, Mr. Julius Linson "Pete" Reid, Jr., departed this life on Thursday, November 8, 2001, causing great loss to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Reid, a native of Harmontown, Mississippi, in Lafayette County, was born July 31, 1920, to Julius Linson Reid, Sr., and Lucy Hinton Cook Reid; and

WHEREAS, after moving to Yalobusha County in 1939 with his family, Mr. Reid graduated from O'Tuckolofa High School in 1940; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Reid joined the United States Army in 1942, serving in the 8th Division-12 Engineers, European Theatre, from August 27, 1942, to October 23, 1945; and

WHEREAS, after returning home from service, Mr. Reid began working on his parents' farm cultivating his knowledge of the land into a career that ultimately brought him much recognition; and

WHEREAS, as a young farmer, Mr. Reid met and later married, on April 17, 1948, Marjorie Edwards; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Reid, a dedicated member of Mississippi Farm Bureau and one of the initial members of the Yalobusha County Board, served as county president and on various state committees in his more than 50 years of service to the Farm Bureau; and

WHEREAS, an active member of his community, Mr. Reid was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4100, the American Legion, Post 0037, the Yalobusha County Forestry Association, the O'Tuckolofa Fire Department, the Mississippi Cattle Farmers' Association and the First Baptist Church of Water Valley; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Reid, an outstanding and well-respected farmer received numerous recognitions and awards throughout his career, including a certificate from the State Department of Education for meeting the standards established by the Vocational Division for Superior Agriculture Production and a Certification of Award for the Corn Crop Year of 1950, for successfully producing at least 100 bushels on a one-acre plot; and

WHEREAS, over his many years of farming, Mr. Reid successfully yielded corn, soybean, cotton and cattle, and for such astounding works in the agricultural industry, Mr. Reid was presented with many meritorious certifications and appointments from the United States Department of Agriculture and United States Secretary of Agriculture; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Reid, in January 1964, was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture as a commissioner for the Yalobusha County Soil and Water Conservation Commission, where he faithfully served until 1995; and

WHEREAS, the legacy and memory of Mr. Reid will forever live on in the lives of all who knew and loved him, particularly his survivors, including: wife, Marjorie Reid; daughter, Becky Reid Jones; son-in-law, Dr. Andy Jones; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Leigh and Julie Layne Jones; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to commend such outstanding Mississippians as Mr. Reid, whose positive influence and encouragement will always be remembered:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and accomplishments of Mr. Julius Linson "Pete" Reid, Jr., and express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Julius Linson "Pete" Reid, Jr., and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
