AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 25-3-13, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO INCREASE THE SALARIES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARDS OF SUPERVISORS AND TO DELETE THE REQUIREMENT THAT BOARDS OF SUPERVISORS MUST ADOPT A RESOLUTION IN ORDER FOR THEIR SALARY INCREASES TO TAKE EFFECT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Section 25-3-13, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

     25-3-13.  The salaries of the members of the boards of supervisors of the various counties are * * * fixed as full compensation for their services.

     The annual salary of each member of the board of supervisors shall be based upon the total assessed valuation of his respective county for the preceding taxable year in the following categories and for the following amounts:

          (a)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of less than Twenty Million Dollars ($20,000,000.00), a salary of Twenty-five Thousand Eight Hundred Eighty-two Dollars ($25,882.00);

          (b)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of at least Twenty Million Dollars ($20,000,000.00), but less than Twenty-five Million Dollars ($25,000,000.00), a salary of Twenty-six Thousand Five Hundred Fifty-one Dollars ($26,551.00);

          (c)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of at least Twenty-five Million Dollars ($25,000,000.00), but less than Thirty-five Million Dollars ($35,000,000.00), a salary of Twenty-seven Thousand Two Hundred Nineteen Dollars ($27,219.00);

          (d)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of at least Thirty-five Million Dollars ($35,000,000.00), but less than Fifty Million Dollars ($50,000,000.00), a salary of Twenty-nine Thousand Five Hundred Fifty-six Dollars ($29,556.00);

          (e)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of at least Fifty Million Dollars ($50,000,000.00), but less than Seventy-five Million Dollars ($75,000,000.00), a salary of Thirty Thousand Eight Hundred Ninety-two Dollars ($30,892.00);

          (f)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of at least Seventy-five Million Dollars ($75,000,000.00), but less than One Hundred Twenty-five Million Dollars ($125,000,000.00), a salary of Thirty-one Thousand Eight Hundred Ninety-four Dollars ($31,894.00);

          (g)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of One Hundred Twenty-five Million Dollars ($125,000,000.00), but less than Three Hundred Million Dollars ($300,000,000.00), a salary of Thirty-six Thousand Nine Hundred Three Dollars ($36,903.00);

          (h)  For counties having a total assessed valuation of Three Hundred Million Dollars ($300,000,000.00) or more, a salary of Forty-one Thousand Seventy-eight Dollars ($41,078.00).

     SECTION 2.  The Attorney General of the State of Mississippi shall submit this act, immediately upon approval by the Governor, or upon approval by the Legislature subsequent to a veto, to the Attorney General of the United States or to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after October 1, 2002, if it is effectuated on or before that date under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.  If it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended, after October 1, 2002, this act shall take effect and be in force from and after the date it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
