House Bill 1318

AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION, UPON APPROPRIATION BY THE LEGISLATURE, TO PAY THE  HEALTH INSURANCE PREMIUMS FOR CERTAIN EMERGENCY SERVICES WORKERS WHO ARE INJURED OR KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The Department of Finance and Administration, upon appropriation by the Legislature, shall pay any health insurance premiums due for any uniformed emergency services workers, including, but not limited to, members of law enforcement, volunteer fire fighters, members of the reserve police or members of the CALL fire fighters, who are injured or killed while performing any activity within the scope of their training while on scene, after scene or at the station if such activity places them in jeopardy of the loss of life or limb while performing a hazardous activity such as fire fighting, removing hazardous materials, rescuing, training or responding to an incident or returning to the station or headquarters from such activities.  Such health insurance premiums shall be paid also for the emergency worker's spouse if at the time of the worker's death or injury, the spouse was married to the worker.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2002.
