AN ACT TO DESIGNATE A SEGMENT OF MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY 42 IN FORREST COUNTY AS THE "EVELYN GANDY PARKWAY"; TO PROVIDE THAT EACH SEGMENT OF THE PROPOSED REGIONAL THOROUGHFARE ENCIRCLING THE CITY OF HATTIESBURG SHALL, AS COMPLETED, BE DESIGNATED AS THE "EVELYN GANDY PARKWAY"; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     WHEREAS, long-range plans developed by the Hattiesburg-Petal-Forrest-Lamar Planning Organization propose a transportation system encircling the City of Hattiesburg that is currently referred to as the Regional Thoroughfare; and

     WHEREAS, a map has been developed by the Hattiesburg-Petal-Forrest-Lamar Planning Organization specifying the locations of the roads which will be a part of this Regional Thoroughfare, which map is on file with the Office of Public Services of the City of Hattiesburg; and

     WHEREAS, the Hattiesburg-Petal-Forrest-Lamar Planning Organization, the governing authorities of the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal, and the Boards of Supervisors of Forrest and Lamar Counties have adopted resolutions recommending that the Regional Thoroughfare be named the "Evelyn Gandy Parkway"; and

     WHEREAS, one of the segments of the proposed Regional Thoroughfare is the relocated segment of Mississippi Highway 42 in Forrest County beginning at its intersection with Interstate 59 and extending easterly to its intersection with Macedonia-Sunrise Road; NOW, THEREFORE,

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  That relocated segment of Mississippi Highway 42 in Forrest County beginning at its intersection with Interstate 59 and extending easterly to its intersection with Macedonia-Sunrise Road is designated and shall be known as the "Evelyn Gandy Parkway."

     (2)  The Mississippi Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain appropriate signs along and approaching the segment of highway described in subsection (1) of this section.

     SECTION 2.  (1)  Each segment of the Regional Thoroughfare proposed by the Hattiesburg-Petal-Forrest-Lamar Planning Organization, as described by a map on file with the Office of Public Services of the City of Hattiesburg, shall, as completed, be designated and known as the "Evelyn Gandy Parkway."

     (2)  The Mississippi Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain appropriate signs along and approaching the segments of highway described in subsection (1) of this section that are under its jurisdiction.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
