House Bill 243

AN ACT TO REQUIRE HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND HEALTH CARE FACILITIES TO LIST ON THE BILL OR INVOICE PROVIDED TO A PATIENT EACH INDIVIDUAL SERVICE AND ITEM THAT WAS PROVIDED TO THE PATIENT AND THE CHARGE FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL SERVICE AND ITEM; TO PROHIBIT HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND HEALTH CARE FACILITIES FROM LISTING ONE COMBINED CHARGE FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF SERVICES OR ITEMS ON A BILL OR INVOICE PROVIDED TO A PATIENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Whenever a health care provider or health care facility provides a bill or invoice to a patient with the charges for services and items that were provided to the patient, the health care provider or health care facility shall list on the bill or invoice each individual service and item provided and the charge for each individual service and item.  A health care provider or health care facility shall not list one (1) combined charge for different types of services or items on a bill or invoice provided to a patient.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2002.
