AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE GOVERNING AUTHORITIES OF THE CITY OF COLUMBIA, MISSISSIPPI, TO LEVY AN ASSESSMENT, IN ADDITION TO ANY OTHER ASSESSMENTS AND COURT COSTS, FOR EACH MISDEMEANOR CASE FILED IN ITS MUNICIPAL COURT; TO PROVIDE THAT THE AVAILS OF SUCH ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT SHALL BE USED TO SUPPORT THE PINE BELT CRIME STOPPERS PROGRAM OF THE MUNICIPALITY; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) The governing authorities of the City of Columbia, Mississippi, in their discretion, are authorized, by resolution duly adopted and entered on the minutes of the governing authorities, to levy an assessment, in addition to any other assessments and court costs, not to exceed One Dollar ($1.00) per case, for each misdemeanor case filed in the Municipal Court of the City of Columbia.
(2) The avails of the additional assessment imposed pursuant to subsection (1) of this section shall be paid monthly by the City of Columbia to Pine Belt Crime Stoppers for use in procuring information to aid authorities in the capture and conviction of persons committing crimes and in support of good law enforcement.
(3) The provisions of this section shall be repealed from and after July 1, 2002.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
