AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 47-5-515, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO CLARIFY WORK TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR INMATES; TO REPEAL SECTION 47-5-517, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, WHICH MANDATES THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT FOR DATA PROCESSING ENTRY BY INMATES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 47-5-515, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

47-5-515. (1) The Department of Corrections shall establish work training programs in conjunction with private industry to provide training to offenders in those trades in which there is a shortage of workers.

(2) The commissioner may cooperate with private industry for the establishment of work training programs, and utilizing the Mississippi Prison Industries Corporation.

(3) Private industry shall provide the training at state correctional facilities.

SECTION 2. Section 47-5-517, Mississippi Code of 1972, which requires the Department of Corrections to contract with the Department of Economic and Community Development for a data processing entry work program for inmates, is repealed.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
