AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 41-21-201, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO AUTHORIZE THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO TEST FOR CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA (CAH) AS PART OF ITS NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 41-21-201, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

41-21-201. The State Department of Health is hereby authorized to establish, maintain and carry out a newborn screening program designed to detect hypothyroidism, phenylketonuria (PKU), hemoglobinopathy, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and galactosemia which may result in mental retardation or medical complications in children. The State Board of Health is authorized to adopt rules and regulations necessary to accomplish said program.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2001.
