A RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. BOBBY GARVIN AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS PRESIDENT OF MISSISSIPPI DELTA COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

WHEREAS, after nine years of dedicated service, Dr. Bobby Garvin retired as President of Mississippi Delta Community College on March 1, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Garvin was born on January 4, 1941, in Meridian, Mississippi, and graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1959; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Garvin earned a bachelor's and master's degree in education from Mississippi State University and his doctorate degree in education from the University of Southern Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Garvin began his career in education as a classroom instructor in 1964 and has served in various administrative positions, including Dean of Career Education at Lake City Community College in Florida; Vice President for Instructional Affairs at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Mississippi; and Vice President of the Perkinston Campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as President of Mississippi Delta Community College, Dr. Garvin has increased enrollment from approximately 1,800 students to over 2,700; and

WHEREAS, in addition, Dr. Garvin has overseen the expansion of the campus, which includes a new science building, an addition to the Allied Health complex for a dental hygiene program and major renovations to several buildings at the Moorhead Campus; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Garvin was instrumental in bringing the MDCC Law Enforcement Training Academy to the Delta; the establishment of the Delta Center, a technical training center in Indianola; and the Higher Education Center in Greenville, which MDCC shares with Delta State University and Mississippi Valley State University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Garvin is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, the National Alliance of Community and Technical Colleges, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the National Council for Occupational Education, the Mississippi Cooperative Education Association and many others; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Garvin has been lovingly supported in all his endeavors by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Shirrie and Mary Elizabeth; and two grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend outstanding leaders in education such as Dr. Garvin:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Dr. Bobby Garvin, congratulate him upon his retirement as President of Mississippi Delta Community College and express our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Bobby Garvin and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
