A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF MR. JUDSON A. "BUD" THIGPEN, JR., AND EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, Mr. Judson A. "Bud" Thigpen, Jr., departed this life on Tuesday, February 20, 2001, causing a great loss to his family and friends upon his passing; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thigpen was a lifelong resident of Bolivar County, Mississippi, whose father, J.A. Thigpen, Sr., and grandfather, S.F. Thigpen, Sr., served in the Mississippi Legislature; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thigpen followed in his family's footsteps serving two terms in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1964 to 1972, representing the citizens of Bolivar County; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thigpen served the citizens with great pride and distinction, taking an integral part in such far-reaching legislation as the creation of the Mississippi Research and Development Center, funding the massive Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries, establishment of the Central Data Processing Authority, development of Yellow Creek Port and the creation of the Soybean Promotion Board; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thigpen served as the first Chairman of the Central Data Processing Authority, which was organized in 1970, and served as a member of the Capitol Commission from 1968 to 1972; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thigpen was highly respected and admired by House members and staff with whom he worked, for his remarkable knowledge of the legislative process, keen insight into the complex issues facing the State of Mississippi, fairness and forthright approach in dealing with problems, engaging sense of humor and loyalty and devotion to the legislative branch of government; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thigpen is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Nichols Thigpen; four children, Judson A. Thigpen, III, Forest Thigpen, Dianne Thigpen Little and Amy Thigpen Streetman; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and accomplishments of Mr. Judson A. "Bud" Thigpen, Jr., and express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Judson A. "Bud" Thigpen, Jr., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
