A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JOSHUA BRIGHT FOR HIS OUTSTANDING 1999-2000 SEASON AS QUARTERBACK FOR DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY AND FOR WINNING THE NCAA DIVISION II COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Joshua Bright completed the 1999-2000 season as quarterback for Delta State University, leading his team to win the NCAA Division II College Football National Championship; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bright completed the 1999-2000 season with an outstanding record, being the first quarterback in Delta State University and the Gulf South Conference's history and only the third NCAA Division II player to rush and throw for 1,000 yards in a season; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bright's statistics include 1,495 yards and 21 touchdowns rushing; 1,428 yards and 14 touchdowns passing; 2,923 yards total offense; the Gulf South Conference season records of most points scored, 126; and most touchdowns, 21; and

WHEREAS, the NCAA Division II Playoff Record Championship Game History shows Mr. Bright had 175 yards rushing, fifth most in Division II Championship Game History and the fifth player in NCAA Championship Game History to rush for three touchdowns; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bright was awarded the 2000 Charlie Conerly Award, which is given annually to the best collegiate football player in the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bright was named the Offensive Player of the Week and the Offensive Player of the Year by the Gulf South Conference and was named an Academic All-American; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bright has developed a winning and cooperative spirit whose attitude has brought honor to Delta State University; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of this state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Mr. Joshua Bright for his outstanding 1999-2000 season as quarterback for Delta State University and for winning the NCAA Division II College Football National Championship.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Joshua Bright and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
