Senate Concurrent Resolution 534

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAWRENCE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COUGARS FOR THEIR UNDEFEATED 1999 SEASON AND STATE 4A CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Lawrence County High School Football "Cougars" made history by closing out their 1999 dream season with a 21-14 victory over Clarksdale in the State 4A Championship game in Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, December 4, 1999; and

WHEREAS, this victory was the first football state championship in school history, and was also the school's fifth state playoff game; and

WHEREAS, with the win, Lawrence County improved to an incredible 14-0 on the season while the Clarksdale Wildcats, the two-time defending 4A champions, ended at 11-3; and

WHEREAS, much credit for the success of this team is due Lawrence County Head Coach Danny Adams, who won a state championship as an assistant coach in Alabama, and Assistant Coaches Mike Davis, Larry Collins, Randy Shivers, Craig Davis and Trent Hammond; and

WHEREAS, "This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to these kids as far as sports is concerned," Coach Adams said, "I think it's great for this county, and my seniors are the greatest class of kids, humans, students and football players I've ever worked with"; and

WHEREAS, each team member was given a gold medallion by the Mississippi High School Association during the awards ceremony following the championship game, and the team also received the coveted golden football trophy; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this fine group of student athletes, who have brought honor to their school, their county and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lawrence County High School Football Cougars for their State 4A Championship victory and their spectacular 1999 undefeated season.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Danny Adams and to the Principal of Lawrence County High School on behalf of the student body, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
