AN ACT TO CREATE NEW SECTION 45-3-12, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO AUTHORIZE THE COMMISSION OF PUBLIC SAFETY TO PROVIDE A DISTINCTIVE MARKER TO BE PLACED ON THE TOMBSTONE OF ANY TROOPER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. The following shall be codified as Section 45-3-12, Mississippi Code of 1972:

45-3-12. (1) The commissioner is hereby authorized to provide a distinctive marker to be placed on the tombstone of any trooper killed in the line of duty upon request of the trooper's next-of-kin.

(2) There is established in the State Treasury a special fund to be known as the Troopers' Tombstone Marker Fund. The fund shall be funded by an initial appropriation of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00), and shall be comprised of any additional funds made available by the Legislature or by donation, contribution, gift or any other source. The Department of Public Safety shall be responsible for the management of the fund and the disbursement for payments for tombstone markers authorized under this section.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2000.
