AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 73-3-125, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REVISE THE EXEMPTION OF CERTAIN LAWYERS FROM THE NECESSITY OF PAYMENT OF BAR DUES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 73-3-125, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

73-3-125. All lawyers over the age of seventy-five (75) years, and the judges of the Mississippi Supreme Court, Court of Appeals of the State of Mississippi, and Mississippi circuit, chancery and county judges, United States magistrates, judges of the bankruptcy courts, and the judges of the federal courts are exempt from the payment of enrollment fees. Lawyers over the age of seventy-five (75) years and judges of the classes enumerated in this section shall be active members except that no judge shall be eligible to membership on the Board of Commissioners. Lawyers who have retired from the practice of law because of age, serious illness or permanent disability may be placed on inactive status and shall be exempt from the payment of enrollment fees.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2000.
